Acting Legend Karl Malden Dead At 97
Oscar winner Karl Malden has died at his home in Brentwood, California, three years shy of his 100th birthday. The Streets of San Francisco star was born in Chicago in 1912 and raised in Gary, Indiana -- ironically the birthplace of Michael Jackson, who died last week.A former steelworker and teacher, Malden studied acting at the Goodman Theater Dramatic School in Chicago and chose to take his talents to New York, where he became involved with the fabled Group Theater. He made his stage debut in 1937 and struck up a theatrical partnership with legendary director Elia Kazan, who cast Malden in a host of successful Broadway shows. After serving in World War Two, the actor landed his big movie break in 1940's They Knew What They Wanted, and he quickly became an in-demand film star, winning an Oscar for his performance as Mitch in A Streetcar Named Desire in 1951. He also landed roles in classics like On the Waterfront and Baby Doll. Malden became a household name when he teamed up with Michael Douglas in TV cop drama The Streets of San Francisco in the early 1970s. He also became the pitchman for American Express -- a position he held for 21 years. In 1988, he was elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences -- a title he held for five years. Malden's memoir is called When Do I Start?: A Memoir. As well as his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win in 1951, Malden also claimed an Outstanding Supporting Actor Emmy in 1985 for the TV series Fatal Vision. Malden was honored with life achievement awards at the Temecula Valley International Film Festival in 1998 and the Screen Actors Guild Awards of 2004. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame can be found at 6231 Hollywood Boulevard.

Lohan Paid To Attend Birthday Bash
Lindsay Lohan received a present she won't forget -- she was paid a staggering $70,000 to host her own birthday bash. The Mean Girls star turns 23 on Thursday, and she made sure the day would be a profitable one by agreeing to be paid to party at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The venue handed over $70,000 just for the actress to enjoy herself at the pool-side event last Saturday, according to New York Post gossip column PageSix. As part of the deal, Lohan was expected to pose for snappers, and she did it in style -- swapping her bathing costume five times. But it seems the star couldn't persuade her celebrity pals to join in the money-spinning mission -- her on/off girlfriend Samantha Ronson was absent from the festivities.

Fawcett Laid To Rest
Ryan O'Neal paid tribute to his beloved partner Farrah Fawcett in an emotionally 'stirring' funeral service for the Charlie's Angels star. The actress' son Redmond also gave a moving reading during the ceremony at Los Angeles' Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Tuesday afternoon. The 24-year-old and his father were pallbearers who held the star's casket aloft as it was carried into the Roman Catholic church ahead of the service. Redmond O'Neal -- who was granted a three-hour release from jail, where he's serving time on drug charges -- gave the first speech of the ceremony in memory of his mother. Ryan O'Neal sported a gold band on his wedding finger, despite never marrying Fawcett, as he read a verse from the Bible shortly after his son's tribute. The star's longtime friend Alana Stewart gave a self-prepared eulogy about Fawcett, as did her doctor Lawrence Piro. Fawcett's Charlie's Angels co-stars Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith were also at the ceremony to pay their last respects to the actress, who lost her battle with anal cancer last week at age 62. The church and the coffin were decorated with orange and yellow flowers -- the actress' favorite colors -- and the funeral program featured a photograph of a smiling Fawcett in her hey-day, with a full head of her trademark curly hair and wearing a silk and sequined dress. Around 500 people were at the service, according to entertainment journalist Eliot Tiegel, who attended with his wife, Bonnie. He says, 'It was one of the most musical funerals I've ever been to, and that's what happens when you go to a show-business funeral. Overall, it was very stirring.' The intimate service lasted for an hour and the street outside the church was flanked with fans wanting to pay their last respects to Fawcett. As the star's family and friends left the church after the funeral, Fawcett's 90-year-old father James had to be helped to a waiting limousine as he struggled to contain his grief.
